TOPS Staffing began in October of 1987. TOPS will have its 39th birthday very soon. TOPS continues to be a leader within the Western Pennsylvania marketplace for light industrial talent. It was not until 2002 that we began to add to our Family of Companies. What has changed in the 39 years since we began?
1. Resumes: Through the early 1990’s, most resumes where on paper. It was not uncommon for me to open several each day that were mailed to our offices.
2. Advertising: The entire industry was heavily focused on classified advertising in all our area newspapers. This included shop seekers. Most job interviews that happened was a result of a classified ad.
3. Fax machines: It started with the thermal paper rolls. When plain paper faxes began to common in the mid 1990’s, they seemed like such a great invention.
4. Landline phones: phone systems were vitally important in our everyday working lives. They were our only way to communicate with Clients and Candidates.
5. Onboarding: Onboarding use to mean that candidates would come into our office and fill out a paper application. While they were in office, we would conduct a further screening interview.
Obviously, things have changed greatly in 39 years, driven almost entirely by technology. However, all the fundamental practices associated with staffing has not changed. Every candidate call should include a conversation centered on the candidate. Every Client call should be focused on the Client. The firm that can introduce the right Candidate to the right Client wins.
Our Family of Companies has grown significantly since October 1987 and now includes AccountStaff, AllTek, eStaff and Proxy. These niche focused firms are still focused on the same fundamentals as when we first began in 1987. Technology will never change the conversations that drive our business.
