Changing jobs can be a great way to increase your earning potential, gain new skills, and advance your accounting career. However, if your resume shows several short-term positions, employers may have questions. In accounting, where consistency, accuracy, and long-term process knowledge are important, being able to explain your career moves can make a difference.
You may be moving for higher earning potential, a way to move up the ladder and advance your career, or simply for broader experience and exposure to new accounting systems, processes or industry. The catch with that is, to an employer these moves can raise questions of reliability, whether or not a candidate actually has a thorough understanding of a process and ultimately leave them reluctant to hire someone that looks like they may jump ship at the next best offer.
It is vital to be able to explain the why behind the hopping. Be honest. Keep it professional. Looking a little bit hoppy on a resume won't necessarily disqualify for a role but being able to explain why the moves were made, what was learned, and how it can be applied to a new opportunity to do a lot to put a hiring manager's mind at ease.
