As the workforce changes and recent graduates enter the job market, a new dynamic is emerging in the workplace. Automation is beneficial and can significantly improve efficiency, but it also comes with challenges, including mistakes, copyright concerns, and a potential decline in creativity. Let's take a deeper look.

A recent MIT Media Lab study reported that "excessive reliance on AI driven solutions" may contribute to "cognitive atrophy" and shrinking critical thinking abilities. The study delivers a warning that even AI assistants are willing to acknowledge. When I asked ChatGPT whether AI can make us dumber or smarter, it responded, "It depends on how we engage with it, as a crutch or a tool for growth." When I asked again, ChatGPT answered, "AI can make us either smarter or dumber depending on whether we use it to enhance our thinking and learning or rely on it to think for us."

Many educational institutions have banned or restricted access to ChatGPT and other AI tools to help prevent academic dishonesty, protect student privacy, reduce distractions, and promote the responsible use of AI in education, especially at the high school and grade school levels.

When asking a college professors about the use of AI, the answers received had very different responses. One professor stated, "The use of generative artificial intelligence tools is an emerging skill, and throughout the semester, I will provide basic tutorials about how to leverage it."

Another professor had a very different policy. He explained, "Due to the hands on, exploratory nature of the content in this laboratory course, I do not allow any use of generative artificial intelligence."

Finally, the number of AI related copyright lawsuits is increasing as courts, creators, and technology companies continue to define the legal boundaries of AI generated content. These cases reflect growing concerns about how AI systems are trained, whether copyrighted material is used without permission, and who owns the rights to AI generated work. As AI technology continues to evolve, the legal landscape surrounding copyright will become even more important for businesses, educators, writers, and everyday users to understand.

Ultimately, whether you use ChatGPT, AI, or any similar technology is your choice. Like any tool, its value depends on how it is used.
