You’ve made it through the interview process and now the employer is asking for references. Great news as references can often be the final step that confirms you’re the right fit. Here’s how to make sure your references help you shine and not stumble:
· Choose the right people
Pick professional contacts who can genuinely speak to your skills, work ethic and accomplishments. Former supervisors and team leads are best. Avoid family or friends as employers want to hear from people who have directly worked with you.
· Always ask permission first
Before listing anyone as a reference, make sure they’re comfortable and willing to speak on your behalf. This shows professionalism and gives them time to prepare thoughtful responses when contacted.
· Help them help you
Once they’ve agreed, share a quick overview of the role you’re applying for and highlight the key strengths or projects you’d like them to mention. A short refresher about your time working together helps them provide a detailed and accurate endorsement.
· Give them a heads-up
If you know a potential employer will be reaching out, let your reference know who might be calling and when. This small step ensures they’re ready and can respond promptly.
· Follow up and say thank you
After the reference check, send a quick note or call to express appreciation. Keeping those professional relationships strong will serve you well in the future.
REMEMBER, your references are part of your personal brand. Preparing them properly not only helps you stand out but also leaves a lasting, positive impression on everyone involved.
