TOPS Staffing is seeking a skilled Sr. Service Technician for a long-standing automation and controls company in the Pittsburgh region. This is a hands-on position involving control panel assembly, equipment testing, field commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical support across multiple industries including manufacturing, energy, water/wastewater, and process environments.
This role offers long-term career stability, ongoing technical training, and minimal overnight travel (no more than two weeks per year).
Key Responsibilities
Shop Responsibilities
  • Follow all safety procedures and company policies.
  • Kit materials from the bill of materials and stage project components.
  • Review panel/build drawings and report any errors or omissions before assembly.
  • Assist team members in safely handling large assemblies.
  • Build and wire control panels to UL508A standards.
  • Participate in equipment testing, quality checks, and preparation for shipment.
  • Maintain high quality standards throughout the build process.
Field Responsibilities
  • Follow all safety and site-specific access requirements (PPE, drug testing, permits, etc.).
  • Commission and start up variable frequency drives (VFDs).
  • Commission field instrumentation and related equipment.
  • Perform basic PLC and networking troubleshooting.
  • Diagnose equipment issues independently or alongside engineering support via remote connection.
  • Support site commissioning and startup activities for control panels, instrumentation, and networked systems.
  • Perform panel wiring, diagnostics, and field adjustments.
  • Maintain diagnostic tools and ensure proper calibration when required.
  • Clearly understand assigned tasks prior to traveling to the job site.
  • Collaborate with programming engineers when resolving advanced technical issues.

Qualifications & Experience
  • Hands-on experience with instrumentation, controls, and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of control panels, wiring methods, and electrical schematics.
  • Familiarity with process equipment and automation.
