Job Title: Lead Mechanical Engineer (Future Department Head)
Overview:
We are seeking an accomplished and strategic Lead Mechanical Engineer to join our client's team in Pittsburgh, PA. In this critical role, you will oversee technical operations, mentor a team of engineers and designers, and deliver high-quality solutions across diverse markets such as industrial manufacturing, oil & gas, power, and commercial development. This position serves as a stepping stone to becoming the Department Head within approximately one year, as the current department leader plans to retire. Your leadership and technical expertise will directly influence the growth and direction of the mechanical engineering department and shape the future of the organization.
Required Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- PE (Professional Engineer) registration
- 10+ years of experience in mechanical/piping engineering, with a focus on industrial or manufacturing projects
- Proven leadership in managing engineering teams and successfully delivering complex projects
- Deep knowledge of industry codes and standards (ANSI, ASME, IBC, ISO, NFPA)
- Expertise in mechanical design software, including Pipe Flo, Caesar II, and Trane 3D Plus
- Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to develop technical specifications, review deliverables, and oversee design calculations
- Strong organizational skills and the capacity to manage multiple projects and priorities
- Willingness to participate in strategic planning and departmental growth initiatives
Nice to Have Skills:
- Experience with project management or organizational leadership
- Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, and Bluebeam software
- Additional certifications in management or engineering specialties
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Preferred
- An extensive professional background with leadership exposure in industrial, manufacturing, or related fields
- Tracked progression toward management responsibilities over your career
Other Requirements:
- Willingness to travel for site visits and client meetings (up to 10%)
- Ambition to assume a Department Head role following the current leadership’s retirement is highly desirable
- Possession of relevant certifications or management training is advantageous
